INTERESTING INFO

We are situated 10km from the mouth of the Olifants river. The river was named Rio Do Infanta by Joao Infanta captain of the Panteleao in January 1488,It was renamed the Olifants river by Jan Dankaert in 1660 due to about 300 elephants on the river banks and is now called the Nile of SA due to the irrigation on the banks. We are situated near the mouth and this section is one the most pristine rivers in South Africa. Marine species occur including steenbras, stompneus, cob, leervis, gurnard, barbel, harders, springers and elf. In winter when the river is fresh there is Bass and carp.

There is a commercial fishing industry in the area and fish such as harders can be purchased from the local fishermen.

The estuary is a major over winter place for birds, over 125 species occur and marine, estuary and fresh water species are to be seen. We also have black harriers breeding on the farm.

Animals such as otters are a common sight and the occasional seal can  be seen.
